When I was giving birth to JJ, I was told by the doctor to take off all my jewelries. I was going into the operating theater and they couldn’t have any metal on me. Subsequently, I choose to not put any earrings on while JJ was a baby, since I was afraid he’d pull on it. Ever since I was a little girl, I have always had earrings on. So when I tried to wear earrings again once JJ is old enough to understand that he can’t pull on people’s hair or ears or anything, I was surprised to learn that my earrings hole has partially closed! Now, to be clear, it didn’t fully closed. It’s just that the top layer has developed a film of sort on both ears. While I was able to get the earrings through once I pierced that top layer of film, after a while, the area where I put on the earrings would become itchy and watery and stinky. Gross, right?! So I simply decided to not wear earrings. Not a hard decision, since I had long hair and no one can really see them anyways.
But… I just cut my hair. Into a pixie cut… So it’s short and my ears stick out. And if I don’t wear makeup or wear earrings, I look like my brother… Oh, what to do…? I can’t wear earrings! Then while browsing Etsy, I stumbled upon a pair of magnetic earrings! Bingo! Here’s the solution! I wasn’t too keen on the price, so I decided to make my own 🙂
So to make your own pair, here’s what you need:
- Cotton yarn (the thinner the better) or DMC cotton (those kind used for cross stitch).
- A crochet hook one size smaller than recommended.
- Strong magnet buttons.
- Tapestry needle.
- Hot glue gun.
Now, there’s no need to go out and buy super expensive cotton crochet yarn for this. You’ll only be needing a small amount. Use whatever cotton yarn you have, or buy some DMC cotton strands. I’m using my leftover cotton yarn from my crochet play suit and a 2mm crochet hook. I got my magnets from the dollar store.
This tutorial is super easy! Just crochet whatever shape you want and then stick it on to the magnet with the hot glue gun!
Here’s what I created:
To make the heart, go here.
To make the star, go here.
To make the flower, go here. Please note, the flowers here made using DMC cotton yarn and a bigger sized hook. I already had some crochet flower leftover from a previous project.
Here’s what the earrings looks like on me!
Super simple right! You don’t have to make just flowers, hearts and stars though! Search Google for more crochet appliques and get creating!
